Mbps vs MBps: What Is the Difference?

Internet speeds are measured in Mbps. File sizes are measured in MB. The units look nearly identical but mean very different things - and confusing them causes endless frustration when your "fast" internet plan seems to produce slow downloads.

The One Fact That Explains Everything

There are 8 bits in 1 byte. That single fact is the root of all the confusion between Mbps and MBps.

  • Mbps (lowercase b) = megabits per second - used to measure network speeds
  • MBps (uppercase B) = megabytes per second - used to measure file transfer rates
